Heroin exists in a variety of forms – in the salt or base form and with the presence or absence of additional substances such as drugs, powdered milk or washing powder. Most commonly it appears as a white or brown powder or as a black, sticky substance. Pure heroin is a white powder with a bitter taste, while heroin of other coloration results from dilution. Typically heroin is injected, sniffed/snorted, smoked with tobacco or heated on a tin foil, known as “chasing the dragon”. Although euphoria occurs most quickly and intensely following intravenous injection, sniffing/snorting has increased in popularity as a method of taking heroin.
